How this doctor can help:

Thyroid issues can cause a range of symptoms, including changes in weight, energy levels, mood, or a goiter that may make swallowing or breathing difficult. Dr. Rastko Živić approaches each patient with care, starting with a thorough history and physical exam to identify primary symptoms and potential changes in the thyroid gland.

After the initial evaluation, hormonal analysis and thyroid ultrasounds help determine the nature and extent of the issue. In some cases, a fine needle aspiration biopsy may be necessary, offering a more precise diagnosis without the need for surgery.

Once the test results are in, Dr. Živić discusses all treatment options with the patient. For cases requiring surgery, such as large goiters, cysts pressing on surrounding structures, or suspected malignancies, Dr. Živić uses minimally invasive thyroid surgery techniques. These techniques allow for quick recovery, minimal scarring, and reduced risk of complications. Thyroid surgery may involve a partial resection (lobectomy), removing only part of the gland, or total thyroidectomy, where the entire thyroid gland is removed. Special care is taken to preserve surrounding structures, such as the vocal cords and parathyroid glands, to minimize any postoperative issues.

Professional philosophy and approach to patient care:

“Not every change in the thyroid gland is cause for concern, and not every hormone imbalance requires surgery. However, when surgery is necessary, it’s important to know that most procedures are minimally invasive, recovery is quick, and patients can swiftly return to their daily activities. In the vast majority of cases, surgery completely resolves the issue, and further treatment is not needed.”
