Prof. dr
Tomislav Ranđelović
General surgeon
About
A legendary Belgrade surgeon, internationally acclaimed for his expertise in surgeries of the esophagus, stomach, and the entire digestive system. He gained his experience in the operating rooms of the Clinical Center of Serbia (First Surgical Clinic) and the Clinical Hospital Center “Bežanijska Kosa,” and he also led the Surgery Clinic at the Emergency Center. He’s a tenured professor at the Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade, Department of Surgery with Anesthesiology, and a towering figure in local surgery, renowned globally for his esophageal surgeries. He was a pupil of the esteemed Serbian surgeon, Professor Zoran Gerzić.
Professor Ranđelović operates across the digestive tract, from the throat and esophagus to the stomach, pancreas, small and large intestines. He tackles complex cases, including reoperations after other surgeons’ procedures. He considers himself an inventive surgeon, unbound by conventions, ready to think outside the box (“sometimes I use surgical techniques that are seventy years old when I’m confident that the procedure will save a patient’s life”).
He obtained his master’s degree in digestive surgery and earned his doctorate in the early nineties on gastric cancer. He has furthered his training in Italy, Japan, and the USA and is a member of numerous European and international digestive surgery associations.

How this doctor can help:
Surgery plays a crucial role in treating digestive tract diseases. Surgical interventions, especially complex and major ones that involve removing organs or parts of organs, are sometimes the best course of action. The types of diseases Professor Ranđelović has encountered over the decades are typically chronic, more serious, and long-lasting, requiring continuous treatment and ongoing monitoring for patients. Professor Ranđelović is among the rare surgeons in the country who, due to working in various dynamic settings (emergency departments, surgical clinics), have dealt with an extraordinary range of diseases, injuries, and complications in a large number of patients.
Professional philosophy and approach to patient care:
“Time is everything in surgery! A surgeon’s manual skills, knowledge, and talent can work wonders, but it’s crucial that time is on our side. Surgery is serious teamwork, and there’s no good surgery without a good team. Even a minor detail can jeopardize a surgeon’s efforts, which is why it’s vital to be a good team player. Patients should trust us, but first, they must trust themselves and their instincts, and come for an examination when they feel discomfort. Time must be on our side.”
