Bladder neck contracture is a condition where the exit part of the bladder narrows, potentially hindering the flow of urine. It can arise from various factors—from benign prostatic hyperplasia, as a consequence of surgeries, from scars from injuries, or from inflammatory processes. Symptoms may include difficulty urinating, pain, or a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying.

To diagnose bladder neck contracture, various methods are used. Cystoscopy allows direct insight into the inside of the bladder and the bladder neck, while uroflowmetry measures the flow rate of urine, which can indicate constriction where a decreased flow rate is recorded. Additionally, urography provides a visual representation of the urinary tract using contrast and can reveal structural changes.

Treatment depends on the cause, symptoms, and the overall health of the patient. Drug therapy that relaxes the muscles of the bladder neck can be effective for mild cases. In more advanced cases, transurethral resection of the bladder neck (TURBN), where the narrowed tissue is removed or cut through the urethra, may be applied. Dilation involves balloons or dilators to widen the narrowed part. The choice of treatment should be the result of consultations with a urologist, where sometimes various treatments are combined for the best results. With proper treatment, most patients can expect improvement, but regular monitoring and communication with the doctor are key to adjusting the treatment.
